ARCHITECTURE
2021

The first buildings of EPFL in Lausanne were designed by Zurich architect Jakob Zweifel and the firm Zweifel + Strickler + Associates, following a national architectural competition launched in 1969. The first phase of the new campus was inaugurated in 1978.
The project was conceived as a flexible and expandable university complex. Its architecture is based on a large modular grid, standardized construction and a clear organization of circulation, allowing the campus to evolve according to changing needs.
Characterized by its rational structure, industrial expression and extensive use of prefabricated elements, the original EPFL complex is considered an important example of Swiss post-war architecture.
